Shelling has intensified from the side of Karachun mountain - the highest point near Slavyansk, forcing activists to retreat from a strategic railway crossing in the city. The TV tower on the mountain was occupied by the Ukrainian army on May 2. Addressing various figures in the Kiev government, one activist called the Ukrainian armed forces "bastards" who are "shooting at our town." The suburbs of Cherevkovka, Andreevka and Semenovka were all affected by shell splinters and stray bullets from the battle. Mayor of Slavyansk, Vyacheslav Ponomaryev revealed on Friday that eight anti-Kiev activists had been killed in fierce clashes with Ukraine's military.
